Robert Downey Jr. Was Paid $50 Million To Star In 'The Avengers.' More Than The Other Cast Members Combined

Robert Downey Jr. is paid quite handsomely for his movie roles. He's the kind of bankable actor major studios want in their movies to assure fans line up at the theaters. He recently confirmed that he was paid an astounding $50 million to star as Iron Man in 2012's blockbuster The Avengers.

"Isn't that crazy?" he told GQ. "They're so pissed. I can't believe it. I'm what's known as 'a strategic cost.' "

To put that figure into perspective we have to look at the salaries of the other actors for their roles in the film.

Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk) made between $2 million-$3 million.

Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) made between $4 million and $6 million, which means Downey Jr. made double their combined salaries.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide, which is great for Disney and Marvel Studios, but is any actor worth what Downey Jr. was paid?
